Actions Speak Louder than Words

Actions Speak Louder than Words

A devotional from Jenny Harrison

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8 [NIV]

A young child came to the conclusion that her aunt loved her a lot because she showed her much affection. Whenever her aunt saw her, she scooped her up in a huge hug and then spent time playing with her – be it with dolls or snuggled on the sofa reading. Because her aunt gave her undivided attention, the child had no doubt she was loved.

Doesn’t that scenario remind you of the saying, “Actions speak louder than words”? Doesn’t that saying remind you of Jesus’ actions towards us? Don’t His actions speak loudly of His love? It’s been said that even if you were the only person on earth Jesus still would have shed his blood, suffered humiliation and shame, and died on the cross. Even before we knew about Him, He had a plan to redeem us from sin. His death on the cross was that plan.

In the same way the little girl never doubted her aunt’s love, so can we have the benefit of knowing Jesus’ actions on our behalf. They shout clearly that He is for us and that He loves us dearly.

If you’re like me, there have been times in your life where you felt like God didn’t love you. It’s easy to concentrate on our feelings. That being so, how might focusing on His actions encourage or convince you of His affection for you?

Dear Lord, thank You that Your actions from the cross speak loudly of Your love.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
