Overlooking Treasures in History ~ Barbara Britton

It's Wahoo Wednesday and I'm pleased to welcome author Barbara Britton to share the story of one of 5 intrepid women from the Old Testament you may never have heard about.

With that in mind, Barbara is offering a free eBook copy of this featured book to one of this post's readers. See below for details.

Overlooking Treasures in History
by Barbara Britton

I have been a Christian for over four decades. I’ve participated in weekly Bible studies, read through the Bible, and even joined a Bible quizzing team in high school. How had I missed the story of the daughters of Zelophehad? If they were the recipients of only a few verses then I could explain it away, but these historic sisters show up in the book of Numbers and the book of Joshua.

Who are the daughters of Zelophehad? Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah are five orphaned sisters who go to Moses and ask to inherit their deceased father’s land. This was no small ‘ask.’ Girls didn’t inherit land, especially young, unmarried girls. Where did these girls get the gumption to challenge societal norms of the day? Wouldn’t it be fascinating if we could hear the late-night tent talk of these sisters?

We may not have the words the girls said to each other, but we have the words the girls said to Moses. The girls also spoke to Eleazar the priest, the leaders of Israel, and a whole assembly. What did they say?

“Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah’s followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
(Numbers 27:3-4 NIV)

Moses, to his credit, did not dismiss the girls’ request. Moses sought God and God said the girls were correct. God says in Numbers 27:8 (NIV), “If a man dies and leaves no son, turn his inheritance over to his daughter.”

Yay, God!

There is more to the story of the daughters of Zelophehad that I bring out in my latest work of biblical fiction, “Lioness: Mahlah’s journey.” Many leaders were not happy with this new revelation and the girls would be brought before an assembly again.

I had only planned to write one book about these historic girls, but one book turned into three. The Israelites took several years to conquer Canaan, so the daughters of Zelophehad had to wait to receive their inheritance. They don’t let Joshua forget about their inheritance either.

The Bible never ceases to amaze me. Now, I pay more attention to stories in lesser-read books of the Bible. And I did have fun creating the girls’ tent talk.

Back cover copy of “Lioness: Mahlah’s Journey:”

While the Israelites struggle to occupy the Promised Land of God, Mahlah bat Zelophehad is orphaned and left to care for her four sisters. But daughters of the dead are unable to inherit land, and it will take a miracle for Mahlah to obtain the means to care for her sisters and uphold the vow she made to her dying mother.

Mahlah must seek Moses, the leader of her people, and request something extraordinary—the right for a daughter to inherit her deceased father’s land. A right that will upset the ox-cart of male inheritance and cast her in the role of a rebel.

But, God is the protector of the orphan and the widow, and five orphaned daughters need His help. With God, anything is possible. Even changing man’s tradition.
Theme: Go forth with God.
You can purchase “Lioness” from Amazon or Barnes & Noble or other retailers.
“Heavenly Lights: Noah’s Journey” and “Claiming Canaan: Milcah’s Journey” will launch this spring.
Okay, blog readers, were you aware of the story of the daughters of Zelophehad?

Author Barbara M. Britton on Clash of the Titles Blog Tour ♦ Giveaway

Today we welcome debut author Barbara M. Britton and get to know a little more about what makes her tick. Barbara, welcome!

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I write on a paper notepad with a pen or pencil. Yes, I write everything long hand and then I type it into a computer. I’m not the best typist (I was one of two freshman put in biology class instead of typing) so it is easier for me to scribble what is going on in my head and transcribe it later.

What makes this book special to you?

“Providence: Hannah’s Journey” was my first Biblical Romantic Adventure and my first story to win a writing contest in the inspirational category. I had to chuckle when judges said they liked my “modern Biblical voice.” What is that? I really do talk normal. Okay, I use a few Wisconsin words like bubbler and brat (this is not a nasty kid, but a sausage). Hannah’s story was the fourth book I wrote, but the first to be published.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

The dreaded middle is the hardest part for me to write. I have a good idea where to start my stories, and I know there will be a happy ending, but all those chapters in-between have to be structured just right. Attention spans are getting shorter, so I try to keep my pacing fast and my dialogue interesting. And of course, there has to be a point to the scene I’m writing, or the middle will “sag.” Writing is a lot of hard work and perseverance.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

The best advice I received as a newbie writer was to join a professional writing organization and attend conferences centered on writing. Since my first book was a romance, I joined Romance Writers of America and got involved in the local chapter, Wisconsin Romance Writers of America. I served on the WisRWA board for five years and made several friends, one of which is my critique partner. A group of us meets once a week to write, brainstorm, and talk shop. I also take online courses and attend workshops on the craft of writing. I also would encourage writers to never give up. I was told my writing was “too clean and wholesome” but I stuck to my beliefs and eventually sold a story. I also belong to the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW).

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Yes, a huge thank you for reading Hannah and Gilead’s story. With so many books to choose from, I am grateful they chose mine to read. Please leave a review if you enjoyed the book. Some books don’t get “seen” at online book stores unless they have fifty reviews.

Thanks to Barbara for stopping by today. Be sure to pick up her debut Biblical fiction, Providence: Hannah's Journey.

Jumbled Bible Stories

by Peggy Blann Phifer @pegphifer

The Bible is a magical repository for story ideas. Every story in there is a metaphor with limitless possibilities for retelling.

But let's think out of the box.

For Example:

1. Place Lot's wife at a school board meeting in Kansas.

2: Tempt Adam with a Corvette rather than an apple.

3: Turn Job into a bus driver and give him a test that even God couldn't dream up.

I mean no disrespect with thiese ideas, but take a few minutes to exercise your writer's imagination and have some fun.

What can you come up with? You don't need to use the suggestions above. Come up with your own situations.

Amber Schamel, an Interview

welcome_birdhouse_flowers

Whispers in Purple is pleased today to welcome author Amber Schamel who was gracious enough to answer some interview questions for me…and for you.

Let’s get to know her for the next few minutes, okay?

Hi, Amber, ready to go?

When people find out we’re writers, someone will inevitably say ‘I’ve always wanted to write a book’ or, ‘I’d like to write a book someday,’ and you’re probably no exception. What is/would be your response?

Writing isn't easy. It's a long journey of blood, sweat and tears, so be prepared for that. But if you're truly called to write, you'll make it through and it will be worth it. Be willing to learn, and give it your best.

I’m always curious about other writer’s habits, quirks, and the like: background music, or complete silence? Do you snack when you write? Share some of yours.

I almost always listen to soundtracks when I write. Right now I'm alternating between Christmas Music and THE BIBLE soundtrack as I work on revisions to The Swaddling Clothes which is set to release before Christmas. I usually don't snack, but I love a hot cup of coffee, tea or cider. I also diffuse essential oils as I write. Today is peppermint which helps with focus, energy and is also a Christmassy scent. ;)

Tell us five random things about you.

1) Jesus Christ is everything to me.
2) I am the second born of 12 children.
3) I love Italian food.
4) Tickling my little brothers and sisters is one of my favorite hobbies.
5) I love Christmas.

What sparks your creativity when feeling drained?

Honestly? I go back and do more research. I love history and usually find something that lights the creativity.

Describe your favorite writing space.

I write anywhere that I can steal a few moments, but my favorite is propped up on my bed with my lap desk, a blanket over my feet, ear-buds with soundtracks in my ears, and a cup of something hot in the cup-holder.

Coffee or tea?

Both. I love coffee, but I also like a good cup of tea. One of my favorites is the Irish Breakfast tea with some cream and sugar. Israel has the best breakfast tea, but it's difficult to get. LOL

Fun question: If you’d been born into the animal kingdom instead of the human race, what animal would you be, and why?

My hope is that I would be a lamb. The lamb is pure and surrenders all its rights to the shepherd, following Him with trust and confidence.

Oh, I like that!

Now, let’s get to the book we’re featuring today.

  • Amber Schamel front final· Title: The Master's Calling
  • · Publisher: Vision Writer Publications
  • · Release Date: 11/2/15
  • · Genre: Biblical Fiction
  • · Stand alone or series: Book 3 Days of Messiah Series

What’s the book about and how did you come to write it?

The Master's Calling is about Malon, the son of the main characters of books one and two. Malon's greatest dream is to become a disciple of Jesus.

I wanted to take readers on a journey of adventure and excitement that would ignite their faith, bring the Bible to life, and inspire them to put their trust in God even when things don't seem to be going the way we need them to.

Give us the back cover blurb:

After generations of waiting, the Messiah has come at last. And not a day too soon. All his life, Malon Ben-Tyrus has been stifled beneath Roman laws and religious traditions, and he longs to be free. The oppression of the Romans worsens every day, and the religious system led by the Scribes and Pharisees has grown corrupt.

Malon believes his life calling is to become a disciple of the Messiah and help free Israel from bondage. When Jesus heads to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, Malon knows this will be a historic event. Jesus will enter the city as the Son of David and take His place as the Messiah of Israel. He longs to follow Jesus to Jerusalem, but his family won't allow him to go.

When at last his family consents, Malon arrives in Jerusalem only to discover that he is too late. The man he thought to be the Messiah has been crucified, and Barabbas—his greatest enemy—has been set free.

Appalled by the cowardice of Jesus' disciples, Malon returns home seething with frustration and despair. Everything he believed he was destined to become died with Jesus. Was he wrong about his destiny?

Where can folks find you on the Internet?
