Delving into the Realities of College Life with Nike Chillemi

Delving into the Realities of College Life, a Story Behind the Story post

When I started out writing my first Christian New Adult Romantic Suspense, what didn't I know about college life today? Everything, it seems. Oh, there was one thing I did know that still held true. College cafeteria food remains ultra-horrible. Kids usually stick to the one or two menu items that are pretty good, like hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, and make-your-own-salad.

Other than that, I was at a loss. This is a generation that lives in and by their smart phones. I have a dumb phone and use it basically for making calls. Oh, dear, I was in trouble at the very start.

I had to give myself a stiff shake and remind myself I am a writer. There is such a thing as research. Much of what I found (but not all) was disheartening. It seems college students are woefully ill prepared socially, and college professors lament they lack common sense. Umm, that sounds about where I was at right out of high school when I went to college.

I came across articles written by 20-somethings complaining how today's movies misrepresent college. One young writer said these films had her "stoked" that she was going to have the best time ever in college. These films made it seem as if college was all about partying, making lifelong BFFs, and once-in-a-while going to classes.

So, in THAT SPECIAL ONE, I tried to present a more realistic picture of college…even as I wrote in deep conflict and a very, very low point for the heroine. I brought in the need for friendships in college and tried to show the difference between healthy friendships and unhealthy ones. I also gave my heroine and hero jobs while they were in school because college isn't a no care in the world place. I tried, and hopefully succeeded, to present a relevant picture of college life, while presenting a thrilling story.

About Nike:

Like so many writers, Nike Chillemi started at a very young age. Her first major work was a Crayola, fully illustrated book she penned as a little girl (colored might be more accurate) about her then off-the-chart love of horses. Today, you might call her a crime fictionista with a humorous side. Her passion is crime fiction. She likes her bad guys really bad and her good guys smarter and better.
Nike is the founding board member of the Grace Awards and its Chair, a reader's choice awards for excellence in Christian fiction. She has been a judge in the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016 Carol Awards in the suspense, mystery, and romantic suspense categories; and an Inspy Awards 2010 judge in the Suspense/Thriller/Mystery category. Her four novel Sanctuary Point series (out of print), set in the mid-1940s has finaled, won an award, and garnered critical acclaim. The first novel in the Veronica "Ronnie" Ingels/Dawson Hughes series HARMRUL INTENT won in the Grace Awards 2014 Mystery/Romantic Suspense/Thriller/Historical Suspense category. Interview - Getting to know DeAnna Dodson

Whispers in Purple is pleased to bring you an interview with author DeAnna Dodson, aka Julianna Deering.

Hi, DeAnna, welcome. Let’s sit and chat a while.

That would be great. Thanks for having me!

First, and for fun, what five words best describe you?

Oooh, that’s a tough one. Um, Christian, ailurophile, bibliophile, quilter, and dreamer.

Second, tell us a bit about yourself, and your alter-ego, Julianna.

Well, I’m a native Texan, a real homebody. I have three cats that I love tremendously, and I hate yardwork. I never had any plans to be published or even to write, but when I was in college and bored with my accounting classes, I started writing scenes just for me. Those scenes eventually became my first book, In Honor Bound. To my amazement, that book was published and I have not looked back since. These days, I write contemporary mystery and romance for Annie’s Fiction and for Guideposts.

Julianna always wanted to write mysteries like the ones she enjoyed from Agatha Christie, Marjory Allingham and Dorothy L. Sayers. She loved watching the wonderful BBC production of these authors’ books (and others) and movies from the great 1930s, like The Thin Man and its sequels. So there was nothing more natural for her to take a little bit of Nick and Nora and mix them with Tommy and Tuppence to get her British-American couple, Drew and Madeline. She has a tremendous amount of fun writing them.

Next, why did you choose to write under two different names?

The pen name was actually my publisher’s suggestion. They thought it would be a good way to let my earlier readers know that The Drew Farthering Mysteries were something completely different from what I had published before.

I have visited your website and books page, and I’m captivated. I want to read them all! Can you share a little bit about each series?

Oh, thank you! I’m so glad the website caught your interest. I just got through sprucing it up.

My first series, The Chastelayne Trilogy, is a romance-adventure trilogy set in medieval times. In college, I spent a lot of time studying medieval English history and Shakespeare, and I couldn’t resist putting a lot of that into a story about a young man who becomes king under what he considers less-than-honorable circumstances. And, of course, he is forced into an arranged marriage following the loss of the girl he truly loved. Could he learn to forgive and love again? That was the question I wanted to answer.

After my medieval books, I began to write contemporary mystery for Annie’s Fiction. I’ve worked on several series for them. I wrote four books for their Annie’s Attic series, one for their Secrets of the Quilt series, one for their Antique Shop Mysteries, and two for their Secrets of the Manor Library Series. They’ve all been fun to write, though I think my favorites are The Diary in the Attic, which is a contemporary mystery that has a few retrospective scenes from World War II, and Decadent Deceit, which splits time between present day and the court of Marie Antoinette. I always enjoy adding a historical aspect to my stories even if they are contemporary.

I have just started writing for Guideposts, too. My first book for them, Thicker Than Water, is due out on December 20th. It’s also a contemporary mystery, and it’s set on Martha’s Vineyard.

Last, but definitely not least, are my Drew Farthering Mysteries. As I mentioned, I love the classic mysteries and movies of the 1930s, so it was a natural for me to create a series based on that. English Drew and his American lady love, Madeline, always seem to find a crime to solve whether in their little Hampshire village of Farthering St. John or farther afield somewhere in Great Britain. Along with Drew’s best friend, Nick, they manage to get into and out of trouble with humor and style and God’s grace. I love writing about not only the mysteries themselves, but the cars and the clothes and the dialog of the time and, of course, Drew and Madeline’s romance. Who could ask for more?

Another question I have a lot of fun with: If you were an animal, what would you be? Why?

Oh, I’d definitely be a cat. They have no doubt that the world and everything in it is there for their amusement, and they always land on their feet. Besides, who wouldn’t want to be that cute?

Okay, about Death at Thorburn Hall. Give us an overview of the book (back cover blurb/short synopsis), publisher, release date, purchase link, etc, and share the opening paragraph or two. I love a good teaser.

Back Cover Blurb:  Drew Farthering arrives in idyllic Scotland for the 1935 British Open at Muirfield hoping for a relaxing holiday, but he soon finds a mystery on his hands. Lord Rainsby, his host at Thorburn Hall, fears his business partner may be embezzling and asks Drew to quietly investigate. Before Drew can uncover anything, Rainsby is killed in a suspicious riding accident.

Thorburn Hall is filled with guests, and as Drew continues to dig, he realizes that each might have had a motive to put Rainsby out of the way. Together with Madeline and Nick, he must sort through shady business dealings, international intrigue, and family tensions to find a killer who always seems to be one step ahead.

Excerpt:
Madeline Farthering gripped her husband’s arm a little more tightly as they made their way through the mass of people crowding Waverley Station, certain that if they were separated in this chaos she’d never be able to find him again. Drew said something to her, but she could only shake her head and shrug.
He repeated whatever it was he had said, but the crackling announcement of a delayed train arrival blaring through the station made it impossible to make out.
She pressed a little closer to his side. “What did you say?”
By then the announcement had ended, and her shouted question drew the attention of several passersby. A blush heated her cheeks.

Drew’s gray eyes were warm and laughing. “Having fun, darling?”

What’s next for you?

That’s a good question. I know I have at least two more Guideposts books to do, and I hope many more to follow. I also have tentative plans to do another Annie’s series, though this one is supposed to be romance/women’s fiction rather than mystery, which will be a lovely change. After that, I don’t know. I’d love to write more Drew books, but we’ll have to see how the ones I already have out do. The more readers clamor, the more likely it is that the publisher will want more. I also have a delicious idea for a Regency romance, but we’ll have to see what comes of that. At any rate, I’ll have plenty to do.

Interview with author Martha Rogers

It's great to have a re-visit from author Martha Rogers who shares about her newest release, Faces of Her Past. She was gracious enough to answer a few interview questions, so sit back and enjoy the next few minutes.

Hi, Martha, I’m so excited to have you back to talk about your book “Faces of Her Past.”

Peg: You mentioned in the ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) email loop a while back that this was a departure from your usual writing genre. I suspect there’s a story behind this, so . . . what made you decide to dip your toes into the waters of Romantic Suspense?

Martha:  It was something I started years ago as an entry for a short story contest. It did well, and I put it aside to work on something else. In 2013 I picked it up again and decided to expand it to a novel. I love romantic suspense and mysteries, so I decided to give it a go. When Cynthia [Hickey] asked if I had such a manuscript, I jumped at the chance to finish it.

Peg: Tell us about your main character, Claire Dennison. Where did she come from?

Martha: Several friends of mine have adopted daughters who searched for their birth mothers. One turned out well, one didn’t. I started with the “what ifs” and came up with the initial story.

Peg: What about your male lead, Grant Warren?

Martha: LOL. He’s entirely a figment of my imagination, but I wanted a love interest who had known Claire most of her life and would go to any lengths to help her.

How much research was required to write this story? I mean, you’ve got the FBI involved. Smile That can be somewhat tricky, I would think.

Martha: Author DiAnn Mills and my former critique partner, Kathleen Y’Barbo Turner helped me with that. I also live ½ mile from the Houston FBI headquarters, and a clerk there answered some questions for me.

Peg: Oh wow, how fortunate for you!
I’m always curious about other writers’ work space. Describe your writing area for us.

Martha: You really don’t want to know. Smile I’m the most disorganized person you could know. It’s a wonder I can ever find anything. Two walls are floor to ceiling bookshelves crammed to overflowing with books. I have stacks of them on the floor as well. I keep giving them away, but they keep multiplying like rabbits. Thank goodness for my Kindle or I’d be drowning in books.

Peg:I can so relate to that! Now, about that book:

Faces of Her Past
  • Title: Faces of Her Past
  • Author: Martha Rogers
  • Publisher: Winged Publications
  • Release Date: January 2017
  • Genre: Romantic Suspense
  • Purchase Link: Amazon

  • Give us the back-cover blurb or synopsis for Faces of Her Past.
Martha: When a young woman, adopted as a child, goes looking for her birth mother, she finds much more than she bargained for. With the FBI involved, and her childhood sweetheart determined to help her, mishaps and mistaken identities almost cost Claire Denison her life.
Peg: Will this be a stand-alone book or do you see it as part of a new series?

Martha: Right now it’s a stand alone, but I could see writing the stories of the two secondary female characters.

Peg: After writing THE END, and looking back, did you enjoy writing this story? Would you write another?

Martha: I loved writing the story, but not sure I could do another romantic suspense. Love reading them, but they’re hard to write and do it well.

Peg: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

Martha: I’m working on another story right now that has a concert pianist with a secret love of Elvis Presley music and plays them for her own enjoyment. It’s to be part of a collection to commemorate the life and death of Elvis.

Peg: Ooh, that sounds fun and exiting, Martha. I’m an Elvis fan, too, and love it when I run across a video or two on Facebook or elsewhere. I hope you’ll keep us updated on this!

Featuring Contemporary Novel, "After"

After, an inspirational novel by contemporary Christian fiction author, Joy Ohagwu, is poised to spotlight the strength in transformation, courage in love, and hope in times of despair.

PURCHASE

About the book:

One step will transform her life.
Sixty thousand people watched as Candace Rodriguez literally fell off the stage while performing the national anthem, wrecking more than her self-esteem. Is her music career over? Now, weighing 350 pounds and jilted by her fiancé after the shame of her public fall, can she find another chance at true love? Will her new Christian faith anchor her future hopes?

Former highbrow stock trader, "JB" Patrickson has had enough of life making mockery of his best laid-out future plans. His father insisted he'd never make it more than selling " chickn" stock in Kentucky. Proving him wrong, JB succeeded at the NY Stock Exchange, becoming one of the best US traders...until the market crashed in 2008. Seven years later and mired in debt, he can't shake the urge that God is leading him down a different path. The path of accepting his grandmother's request to come help manage her farm, couple hundred miles away, despite his little to nothing knowledge about farming. Has he fallen low enough to toil with his hands to eke out a single meal? What future could God plan for him on a farm?Twenty years after returning to the US from a fulfilling medical mission in Asia, Dr. and Dr. Mrs. Cantwell gratefully send off two sons to college, purchase a flourishing twenty-acre farm, and prepare to settle into their empty nest stage. But what will they do if God leads one more life into their path, one needing stitches of the soul not of the body? Can they answer His call to service, or will overlooked pain from the past threaten the fragile peace they'd so desperately coaxed into existence to survive together?

What our voters had to say:

--I love the book, AFTER! The cover is catchy, and the contents, inspiring!
--Congratulations, Joy! A lovely book inside and out.~~~Deirdre Lockhart
--I personally saw the love poured into writing "After" and I hope it blesses everyone who reads it! It's Awesome!!!
--CANNOT WAIT TO READ THIS BOOK, JOY!!!! COVER IS ALSO FANTABULOUS!!!!
--Thumbs up, Joy!

Q: Joy, what was writing After like?

A: Thank you for asking. First, I’d like to appreciate everyone that voted for After during the COTT contest. Thank you all very much. I started writing After during NaNoWriMo 2013. Then earlier in summer 2015, after I wrote Candace in as a character for Blossom and Josh's story(which is now After 2), her personality and voice got so strong that she took over the story! It was amazing. I trusted my gut, went with the flow, and ended up publishing Candace's and JB's story as the first in the AFTER series. The AFTER series is about transformation and positively changing one’s lifestyle through fitness. But more importantly, After shows us that we should allow God to assist us in every area of our lives, especially those places where everyone expects us to fail. You can read the story here. Although I enjoyed writing about Candace and JB, I'm glad that I finally completed Blossom and Josh's story as well and it released as After 2 in November 2015.

Q: Can you share with us about your next book?

A: Sure. I'd love to. I'm presently writing Uncommon Ground, the first book in a romantic suspense series, and I’ll share what the story is about. Stella is a widow who's juggling a career and raising an older teen that doesn't believe in God. A disaster occurs that separates them and turns their world upside down. Stella's concerns multiply in the ensuing chaos after she meets Michael, a Christian man with a mysterious past and she wonders how many more unseen twists God trusts her to handle. Like Psalm 68 verse 5 says, God is a defender of the widows. Uncommon Ground is a story where we can identify with each of the characters’ struggles, and if we let it, it can potentially kick our faith higher into greater dimensions. After reading Uncommon Ground, we get to appreciate some of the things we usually take for granted as Christians. Uncommon Ground becomes available for preorder Jan 1, 2016, and I pray everyone gets their copy.

Thank you very much for having me here. God bless you!
