Christmas Angels ~ Carole Brown ~ Recipe

Please welcome author Carole Brown as she talks about her Christmas novella Christmas Angels, why she wrote it and shares a tempting, delicious recipe.
Thank you, Carole!

Christmas Angels has a tiny bit of suspense, nostalgia, and romance in it. The novella has been called a tear-jerker. Written some time ago, I loved this short sweet tale set during WWII.

  • I love to add quirks or special touches to evoke the spirit of the story, the characters, and/or the era. Below, I will share a short scene that touches on the era—the “call to action”—that the people from WWII lived through—that of rationed food.
  • I love to bring to life characters that convey emotional reactions to their storybook life. In all I write, I want strength, goodness, and faith to prevail. In Christmas Angels, Abigail's wavering faith is barely flickering, her fear and doubts are crushing, so is God truly listening? Does he see her struggles?

And most of all, what kind of Christmas miracle could possibly save her?

Here's a brief scene
Gingerbread Scene from Christmas Angels (From the Lake to the River Anthology)

He beckoned with his gnarled hand “Come in. Come in, Abigail. Want some tea? That dismal Dana—even if she is a good cook—brought me some gingerbread last evening. Have some. Have some. It’s good even if I didn’t make it. Sit down, child, for a minute.” Albert toddled over to the fridge and brought out a quart of milk. “Want milk with your tea, Abigail?”
Where had he gotten real milk?
But she shook her head, not wanting to use up his precious supply, and sniffed. The spicy, delectable smell of the gingerbread wafted toward her, and she closed her eyes to savor it. When was the last time she'd had such a treat? Suddenly ravenous, she couldn't wait any longer and crammed her mouth full of the sweet bread. A little sound of moaning escaped from between her lips. This was so-o-o good.

And the reasoning behind all this...
During WWII most people were food rationed. Delights such as nuts, milk, sugar, and eggs were sometimes hard to come by making delights such as gingerbread non-available throughout the war. Everyone was touched by the rationing and all encouraged to participate in “giving up” for the soldiers and the war.

In Christmas Angels, elderly Mr. Albert, Abigail's boarding house neighbor, shares his loaf of gingerbread that another resident (Dana) had given him. Though reluctant to eat any of his treat, knowing how hard the ingredients were to come by, Abigail can't resist. Both Mr. Albert and Abigail enjoy this special blessing through Neighbor Dana's generosity.

May you be blessed as you feast on this moist, delightfully spiced dessert.

Gingerbread Loaf
Ingredients for the loaf:

1 stick real butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 cup of applesauce
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
chopped walnuts, for topping (optional)

for the frosting:
1/2 block (4 oz.) cream cheese, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 – 2 cups powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Spray a 9×5 loaf pan lightly with nonstick cooking spray (or shortening and flour). Using a stand mixer or an electric mixer, cream together the butter and the sugar until fluffy.

Beat in the vanilla and the egg. Blend in the apple butter (or applesauce.)
Slowly add the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices (ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.)

When everything is mixed, pour the batter into your loaf pan. Bake for about 55 minutes until it has risen and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely on a rack before frosting.
To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese with the vanilla and then add 2 cups of the powdered sugar and beat until smooth and creamy. Add a little more sugar if it’s not as thick as you like.
Spread a thick layer of the frosting over the gingerbread cake. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Enjoy!

Fallible ~ Carole Brown ~ Devotional ~ Giveaway

Fallible

 A Devotional from Carole Brown

When we pray for those who have
despitefully used and persecuted us,
it is marvelous how soon the soul gets
calm and tender.
--Unknown

Not too long ago, I had a couple who became angry at me for a very stupid reason. I was crushed. Hurt. Troubled. Angry. How could they? After all I'd done for them. After all the love I'd poured out on them.
After all I'd done... Would something bad happen to them because of the way they'd treated me?

I cried and fretted to myself. Talked and whined to my husband. Shed more tears. Why had this happened? God, where are you when I need you? I wanted to scream the words at him.

This went on for several weeks and there was no difference. Nothing. I was sure I couldn't bear it.

But God.

God didn't forsake me. Instead, he was gently strengthening me by teaching me to lean on Him much more than I ever had before.

God talked with me:
·       Learn to lean on me.
·       Draw close to me.
·       Trust me.
·       Be willing and obedient for HIS WILL

Oh, how much I needed these lessons. They didn't happen in an hour, a day, or even a week. But as I slowly accepted God's word to me, I began to feel peace in my heart again. I began to feel forgiveness, and then the peace and tenderness flowed back into my heart.

Are things perfect because of this? No...but better. No apologies, but at least some communication. No, things aren't back to the way they were before, and that's the point. Maybe God doesn't want it to be as before. Maybe, just maybe, He wants it much better.

One thing I know. He has a plan. If I'm obedient to whatever He says, if I pray and forgive, God will give the increase. Whatever that is.

Matthew 6: 14 & 15:  For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. [KJV]

Christmas Angels Blurb

Her mother called her a failure, and maybe she was. Her husband was gone—in the service, yes, but if he loved her—really loved her, why didn't he write? Or call? Or send the money she needed?

She was scared too, afraid of being alone, and though she loved this sweet little bundle of joy—her baby—well, was she smart enough and strong enough to raise her? She didn't mind doing without all the nice things she'd love to have, but not being able to provide luxuries like Christmas trees, ornaments and presents for her baby girl was beyond enduring.

What she needed was a miracle...and that wasn't going to happen.

Capturing a Man ~ Carole Brown

Capturing a Man
by Carole Brown

The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.

Or so it's said.

In Toby's Troubles, the fourth book in the Appleton, WV Romantic Mystery series, Amy Sanderson, next door business neighbor of Toby Gibson, has loved him forever. But being declared “like a sister” or a “best friend” doesn't cut it. At all.

He's just not interested.

But when she joins forces with him to capture the “ghost” that is breaking into his shop, she has this one chance to prove to him she's worth loving.

What can a woman do?

Let me list some ways that she can help herself in “capturing” a man:

1.     Be true to herself. Don't let down your standards in behavior and belief regardless of the consequences.
2.     Follow God's leading. Once you know God's will for your life, follow how, what and when as God leads in those areas.
3.     Be positive. Be friendly. Be loyal. Be confident. Your value in these areas are important.
4.     Don't be too available. A little competition never hurts, and it might just open a man's eyes to your value, what he's missing, and what God wants.

Example from the book: Toby's Troubles:

1.     In some of the scenes in the book, Amy goes with Toby to auctions and outbids him on certain items he is interested in. Of course, he doesn't like it, but she has a very special reason besides capturing his attention.
2.     A casual date with others sometimes shows the other person that she is desirable in others' eyes. That's not a bad thing, and it worked on Toby.
3.     Although I don't bring in a lot of spiritual scenes in this book, I do allude

to the fact that they both are faithful and loyal Christians. When Toby allows himself to get carried away with denouncing interest in Amy, the hurt on her face convicts him that he's done wrong. This not only helps in showing him he was being unkind and thoughtless, but pulls out hidden emotions about Amy that he wanted no one, including himself, to see. It was a decided turning point in opening his eyes.

Be steadfast in your pursuit. Or as I've written in Toby's Troubles about Amy:

She can be just as stubborn as the man who's determined to ignore her love.

Whatever you want to call it, follow the suggestions above, then go for it.
Happy hunting!
About the Book:

Everyone loves Toby Gibson. A co-owner of Undiscovered Treasures, a unique shop of antiques, collectibles, and junk, Toby is friendly, generous to a fault, the director of the local plays in Appleton and supports his church's youth functions. But the minute his sister, Caroline and her new husband, take off for their honeymoon, a “ghost” begins to haunt the shop—or maybe it's just an intruder. If so, Toby has no idea for what the thing is looking. To add to his troubles, he suspects Amy, not only is bidding for the property he's wanted forever but is in love with him. And he's not interested.

Amy Sanderson who owns the only flower shop in Appleton—Bloomin' Life—is drawn into capturing Toby's “ghost” when her own business is damaged by a destructive intruder. Having loved Toby since a teenager, she's more than willing to join forces with him. But she has no interest in being his best friend or a sister to him. And if she has to resort to schemes of outbidding him at his frequent auction attendances to get his attention, then so be it. She can be just as stubborn as the man who's determined to ignore her love.

In between the break-ins, destruction of property, thefts and personal competitions against each other, Amy and Toby work together to find the thief who seems so determined to find a valuable item, he'll stop at nothing.

 One Brave Woman

by Author Carole Brown

What would you do—how far would you go—to protect your children? To protect the abused?

That's a strange question, you say? We'd do anything—everything—to protect them.
But let's take that thought to a different, deeper level.

·  What if your child child had a devastating illness and all methods of treatment had been exhausted in your country? What if there was a verified, proven treatment that your country would not use (for whatever reason) but was available in this other country? Would you sell everything you own to gain that treatment for your child?
·  What if you visit a friend and while there, you see a child you suspect is being abused. How far would YOU go to protect that child? Look the other way—it's not your business, and after all, it's just a couple unusual bruises and some noises coming from the other house. Call the authorities?
·  What if your sister, your mother, your friends are being abused, and you know it, or even have a thought that it might be so? What would you do to stop it? Encourage them to contact the authorities, abuse centers?
·  What if your child was literally ripped from your arms...
In today's world abuse is everywhere! If you don't believe that, listen to the news, and you'll hear more than you want about the subject.
·  Most days, domestic violence hotlines across the country receive approximately 20,800 calls
·  Violence is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior which is a much larger pattern of dominance and control
·  Approximately, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys are victims of sexual abuse

And there are tons more statistics!

So back to our question: what would you do to protect your children, your friends, your family?

In my debut novel, The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman, I deal with this very difficult and touchy subject. Creating an abusive cult who hid their hideous abuse behind modern habits and today's conventionalities, I raise up one woman who takes on an abusive cult to protect her daughters and her friends.

Did it take a Joan of Arc personality?
Maybe a little, but mostly it took a woman who was afraid, but determined. A woman who had to make hard decisions. Sometimes they were the wrong ones. Somethings, right. A woman who put the lives of others ahead of herself. A woman—a mother—who defied evil and won!

Mothers, Grandmothers, Sisters, Women everywhere, are you brave enough to read this fictional story that will open your eyes to ONE real and serious world issue?  Men, do you want to get an in-depth perspective of abuse and the courage it takes to stand against it? A Kind Word ♦ carole Brown

A kind word doeth good like medicine.

By Carole Brown

The other day a Facebook friend sent me one of those memes that showed a bear, a saying and the word hugs. When I thanked her, she said she’d been thinking of me and hoped all was good.

At that moment, it was.

Kind words usually give a tiny spark of joy, warmth, laughter or peace. I always like to think of those who use them, as a special person. Let’s think about how kind words benefit:

Never be afraid to pass on a kind word. Have you ever seen a store clerk’s face when you said, “Have a good day?” We were in a farm store the other day, and a lady was in training. She wasn’t familiar with all the ins and outs of ringing up a customer, but her trainer did a good job of instructing her. When I assured them I was fine with the slower pace we were receiving, the trainee’s face lit up. I assured her she’d done a good job when our transaction was completed.

Always remember: most people have bad days. Be that person who shares a smile, a word of encouragement, a friendly act. Don’t pass on ugly attitudes or actions because the world thinks it’s the thing to do. Be different and bold and encouraging!

There are many types of people with all kinds of personalities. No matter how YOU try, some people will never change. There are always going to be constant complainers and whiners, depressive people with negative attitudes, grouchy people who are angry at everyone and everything. Don’t let that stop you. It’s so easy to allow yourself to be tainted by those ugly personalities and attitudes. Don’t! Remember, a kind word may do more good than you realize.

Lastly, it’s important to YOU to be kind. Not only will it give you satisfaction in sharing a worthwhile action/word, but it will bring a peace and joy to your own self.

Ephesians 4:32 says: And be ye kind one to another...  As Christmas draws near, let us remember that kindness is one gift we can share with the whole world.

Have a wonderful day, people!

How Great is Our God ♦ Carole Brown

How Great is Our God!

By Carole Brown
And the peace of God which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

It seems everywhere you turn today, the world is a mess. I try to keep up with current events, but sometimes I find myself pulling back away from it all. The enemy of us all would drown us in disbelief, doubt and worry if we would allow it. I find my spirit beginning to flounder in that sea of distress and must need revive it with the good things of God.

In my newest WWII Spies series, in book two, soon to be released, both Jerry and Josie Patterson are rebellious, self-centered people. Neither have given much thought to God, and both have gone gung-ho after their own pleasures and desires.

·       Jerry not only suffers a serious physical injury, but his spirit is troubled over actions taken as a spy in Germany. Guilt over the death of a sweet woman, guilt over all the deceit he needed to use, guilt over the temptations that knocked, and though he didn't give in to them, nevertheless, troubles his mind and soul. Who do you turn to when you have no God in your life?

· Josie, filled with elaborate plans on becoming an Olympic participant once the horror of war is over, ignores all the people in her life—except when it's convenient for her to use them. All that matters is attaining her goal and Jerry. Running roughshod over all others, forgiving and forbearing as they are, is her usual ploy in getting what she wants. So who do you turn to when all your dreams turn to ashes?

It's only after each one of them receive a severe injury that prevent them from doing what they want, only when they think they've lost the other, that they begin to listen to what God is teaching them.

Both rebels in their own way, Josie and Jerry Patterson must figure out how to keep the other's love...and keep the German enemy at bay.

She has two loves—her skating and Jerry, her husband. But when he returns home looking like a skeleton trying to return to life, she’s scared. What happened in Germany to change a man so much? Has another woman captured his heart?

Jerry has vowed to let Josie live her own glamourous life...especially after what happened in Germany. But when his wife's life is threatened, Jerry realizes he can’t stand by and do nothing. Jerry has to risk all for the very soul and life of himself—Josie.

These two damaged, rebellious people learn the hard way that leaning on God instead of their ownselves and abilities is the only true way to love and happiness.

Isn't that so in our own lives? Many times we go headstrong toward our goals, without prayer or definite assurance from God that it's what he wants for us. It seems a good thing, beneficial, and desirable so it must be good for us, right?

God is so great, so faithful, so loving in pulling us back, in teaching us that He is our all in all. Our strength in times of deep distress and trial, our anchor when the storms of life are blowing us off course, our shield when others would hurt or wound our spirits...our peace through it all.

May we, like Josie and Jerry, learn that our God IS a great God. We need have no fear; he does not fail.
