Kathy Cretsinger ~ Smoky Mountain Brides ~ Giveaway

Please welcome author/publisher Kathy Cretsinger (AKA Katt Anderson) to Whispers in Purple blog

Mountains, courtesy pixabay.com. See below why this picture appears here

Hello everyone! Kathy Cretsinger here. I am so happy to be on this blog and tell you a little about what I do as an author and publisher. In truth, authoring is very little, but publishing is a lot. I love the work, the stress, and above all getting to know the people we work with.

Twelve years ago, I began to have thoughts that I could write. I knew nothing about writing, but I still had the desire. A friend told me I could do it. I must have believed her because that’s exactly what I did. I should have learned the craft first, but I like to dive in and then find out what a mess I’ve made.

Remember that book you thought you had to write? Mine was so horrible it’s hidden on a flash drive somewhere. I really don’t want to find it. It was that bad.

Now let’s look at one that turned out to be good. The next book I wrote turned out to be a wonderful tale sprinkled with my ancestors. Callie’s Mountain was the first book I published, and that book started my publishing career.

Like myself, there are a lot of authors that need someone to see the future in their book. They need help in writing a finished product and publishing that product. That’s where we come in at Mantle Rock Publishing LLC. We want a perfect printed copy. We are human and sometimes a mistake is made, but if we all work together as a team, we’ll have a perfect book.

The last book I wrote is Smoky Mountain Brides. My editor, Pam Watts Harris, and I decided we wanted to write a sweet romance set in the Smokies. We both love the mountains, and we’ve both been there many times. It wasn’t hard to come up with two career girls who find true love and get married. I loved working with Pam, and I love this book.

Smoky Mountain Brides by Pam Watts Harris and Katt Anderson (I forgot to tell you I have a pen name) can be found at https://www.amazon.com/Smoky-Mountain-Brides-Katt-Anderson-ebook/dp/B075QQLKW6/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1544822985&sr=1-1&keywords=Smoky+Mountain+Brides. And I’m giving a free copy to one person who makes a comment.

At the present, I’m writing a romantic suspense set in a real place. [Peg here ... see image above] My husband grew up in a small community in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee, between Bristol, TN and Boone NC. This book is set in the community where he grew up. I am very conscious of the people who live there, and I want this book to be enjoyable to them. It will release in June 2019. I won’t give a name until later.

Thanks for visiting with me for these few minutes. Have a blessed day.

Kathy Cretsinger writes under the name of Katt Anderson. She lives in Kentucky with her husband of fifty plus years. They have two grown children, four grandchildren, no cats or dogs, but a few squirrels who live around the walnut trees.

When not writing, you’ll find Kathy people watching, reading, enjoying her flower garden, going to activities her grandchildren are involved in, or helping authors with their manuscripts. Kathy also speaks at writer’s conferences.

She and her husband Jerry are owners of Mantle Rock Publishing LLC. You can visit her at www.mantlerockpublishingllc.com.

To enter Kathy’s giveaway, just leave a comment below, including your name and contact information. Giveaway runs for one week, ending December 26 at Midnight, CST. Winner will be drawn and notified via email on Thursday, Dec. 27, which is why we need your contact info. Thanks.

A Flower Inside a Flower ~ Donna Schlachter ~ Giveaway

A Flower Inside a Flower -- with a giveaway!
By Donna Schlachter

Sometimes beauty finds us in the most unexpected places.

This flower was growing on a shrub in a shopping mall parking lot in Scottsdale, Arizona. I saw it as we crossed the hot asphalt, drawn in by the fuchsia color, amazed when I saw the tiny pale pink/white blossom inside the outer coat.

As I snapped several pictures, I wondered that nobody else who passed me even slowed to glance at what I was so interested in. Even my sister tapped her toe impatiently while she waited for me to catch up with her.

I thought about these blossoms as we continued our shopping, about the intricacy of their design, and how God must get a kick out of creating such beauty and planting it right in our midst, like a gift wrapped under a Christmas tree, waiting to see if we’ll notice.

For me, this opened my eyes to the wonder of blessings disguised as something else in our lives. In June, I stepped into a small boat and rode up the headwaters of the Amazon River in the jungle of Peru. Me, a girl who doesn’t like small boats or deep water. And at the end of the ten-minute boat ride, I discovered a group of boys at a boarding house hungry for one-on-one attention, starved for the love of God.

In September, I stepped onto a cruise ship and rode the open seas to Alaska. Me, a girl who doesn’t like big boats or deep water, who can get seasick standing on a wharf and looking at the bobbing boats. But I didn’t get even a single stomach-flip the entire seven days.

In October, I traveled to Arizona to celebrate my (mumble)-ith birthday with my siblings and spouses. I’d made it to a milestone, one my mother never saw. And I’d done it in relatively good health, with all of my original parts including teeth and hair. We had a great time, relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. And I had the opportunity to see this tiny flower. God blessed me not only with relative longevity, health, and family but also with beauty—a flower inside a flower.

Life isn’t always fun. Or beautiful. Sometimes life is really, really hard. But God is always in control, and He’s always there, waiting for us to acknowledge him. In a boat ride. In not getting seasick. In a flower in a parking lot.

Fellowship with God ~ June Foster ~ Christmas at Raccoon Creek ~ Giveaway

Fellowship with God
by June Foster

(There's a Giveaway here. See below for details)

Psalms 107: 9 "For he has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things."

Since I asked Jesus into my life and heart, I've made it a practice first thing in the morning to read my Bible, pray, and have fellowship with the Lord. But the other day, something gave me pause. For a brief moment, I stopped praying and asked myself. Am I really communicating with someone or talking to myself?

I opened my eyes but from where I sat on the deck, all I saw was the flower beds and trees in my backyard. I listened carefully but only heard the birds chirping. I sipped my dark roast coffee but could taste nothing else. The only aroma I sensed was the gardenias in my flower pot. Oh, and I closed my eyes and extended my hand. No touch met mine. The obvious conclusion was I can't see, hear, taste, touch, or smell God. Yet the Bible is filled with scriptures that talk about His presence with man.
  • ·        1John 1:5 "God is light, in him there is no darkness at all."
  • ·        James 1:17 "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadow."
  • ·        John 3:16 "For God so love the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

So how can I know Him and have fellowship with Him if I can't connect to Him with my senses? Here are a few ways:
  • ·        God's instruction about His will and our lives comes through His word. Psalm 119:105 "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
  • ·        God can be known through His creation: a beautiful sunset, the Grand Canyon, the forests and rivers in Washington state, and the exquisite construction of a lily.
  • ·        God can be known through other people: a kind and loving friend who shows up at the right moment when we need help, a prayer partner, the pastor of one's church who preaches the message truly needed that week, an innocent child filled with wonder when discovering something new.

Best of all, though I can't see or hear Him now, I know that someday I will be able to and I await that day in joyful anticipation. I Corinthians 13:12 "For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face."

Book Spotlight - From the back cover:
When love spans the decades
Emily Eason wants to distance herself from her parents' opulent lifestyle in Birmingham, Alabama, and enjoy life in the tiny rural village, Raccoon Creek and her fifties-style home. But after gazing into the little snow globe she purchased from Hardwicke's Drugs and Gifts, she finds herself transported to another time—her grandmother's era.

Lance Hardwicke is the pharmacist and owner of Hardwicke's Drugs. Four years of pharmacy school didn't allow for much of a social life. Gorgeous Emily Eason, nurse and resident of Raccoon Creek, has captured his attention more than once. The next time she comes in the store, he's determined to ask her out. Perhaps go to Birmingham to see the Christmas lights in his brand-new orange and white '53 Pontiac Pathfinder.

Christmas Angels ~ Carole Brown ~ Recipe

Please welcome author Carole Brown as she talks about her Christmas novella Christmas Angels, why she wrote it and shares a tempting, delicious recipe.
Thank you, Carole!

Christmas Angels has a tiny bit of suspense, nostalgia, and romance in it. The novella has been called a tear-jerker. Written some time ago, I loved this short sweet tale set during WWII.

  • I love to add quirks or special touches to evoke the spirit of the story, the characters, and/or the era. Below, I will share a short scene that touches on the era—the “call to action”—that the people from WWII lived through—that of rationed food.
  • I love to bring to life characters that convey emotional reactions to their storybook life. In all I write, I want strength, goodness, and faith to prevail. In Christmas Angels, Abigail's wavering faith is barely flickering, her fear and doubts are crushing, so is God truly listening? Does he see her struggles?

And most of all, what kind of Christmas miracle could possibly save her?

Here's a brief scene
Gingerbread Scene from Christmas Angels (From the Lake to the River Anthology)

He beckoned with his gnarled hand “Come in. Come in, Abigail. Want some tea? That dismal Dana—even if she is a good cook—brought me some gingerbread last evening. Have some. Have some. It’s good even if I didn’t make it. Sit down, child, for a minute.” Albert toddled over to the fridge and brought out a quart of milk. “Want milk with your tea, Abigail?”
Where had he gotten real milk?
But she shook her head, not wanting to use up his precious supply, and sniffed. The spicy, delectable smell of the gingerbread wafted toward her, and she closed her eyes to savor it. When was the last time she'd had such a treat? Suddenly ravenous, she couldn't wait any longer and crammed her mouth full of the sweet bread. A little sound of moaning escaped from between her lips. This was so-o-o good.

And the reasoning behind all this...
During WWII most people were food rationed. Delights such as nuts, milk, sugar, and eggs were sometimes hard to come by making delights such as gingerbread non-available throughout the war. Everyone was touched by the rationing and all encouraged to participate in “giving up” for the soldiers and the war.

In Christmas Angels, elderly Mr. Albert, Abigail's boarding house neighbor, shares his loaf of gingerbread that another resident (Dana) had given him. Though reluctant to eat any of his treat, knowing how hard the ingredients were to come by, Abigail can't resist. Both Mr. Albert and Abigail enjoy this special blessing through Neighbor Dana's generosity.

May you be blessed as you feast on this moist, delightfully spiced dessert.

Gingerbread Loaf
Ingredients for the loaf:

1 stick real butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 cup of applesauce
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp ground ginger
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
chopped walnuts, for topping (optional)

for the frosting:
1/2 block (4 oz.) cream cheese, room temperature
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 – 2 cups powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Spray a 9×5 loaf pan lightly with nonstick cooking spray (or shortening and flour). Using a stand mixer or an electric mixer, cream together the butter and the sugar until fluffy.

Beat in the vanilla and the egg. Blend in the apple butter (or applesauce.)
Slowly add the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices (ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.)

When everything is mixed, pour the batter into your loaf pan. Bake for about 55 minutes until it has risen and a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool completely on a rack before frosting.
To make the frosting, beat the cream cheese with the vanilla and then add 2 cups of the powdered sugar and beat until smooth and creamy. Add a little more sugar if it’s not as thick as you like.
Spread a thick layer of the frosting over the gingerbread cake. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Enjoy!

H.L. Wegley ~ Virtuality ~ Giveaway

Virtuality
noun:
the quality or state of being virtual

Readers, please welcome author H.L. Wegley to Whispers in Purple blog. Oh, there's a giveaway involved. See details below. ***

Harry, please tell us about your newest release, Virtuality!

~ ~ ~

In my story, Virtuality, the hero, Vince, inherits controlling interest of his deceased brother’s high-tech company, Virtuality Incorporated. Vince is an author, not a computer geek, but his childhood friend and next-door neighbor, Jess, can help because she is brilliant and has an advanced Computer-Science degree.

Virtuality [Inc.] won an Army contract to build a Top-Secret product for military applications. When Vince’s business partner, Patrick, stonewalls Vince by not submitting his security-clearance application, Vince and Jess wonder what’s really going down in Virtuality’s lab. Then someone tries to kill the two.

Seeking answers about the technology and who might want it badly enough to kill for it, Vince and Jess meet with a professor at the University of Washington, Doctor Scoggins, an expert in the field of video games, virtual reality, and their impacts on society.

The following is an excerpt from chapter 23, part of the discussion with Dr. Scoggins about the human mind—material or spiritual:

Jess leaned toward the professor’s desk. “Could artificial intelligence have any role in all of this? I didn’t have enough visibility into Virtuality to know if they’re using AI. But I do know Steven Hawking warned that AI could bring about the end of the human race.”
Doctor Scoggins chuckled. “That would seem to be true only if one has the wrong model for the human brain—actually a wrong understanding of who and what a human being is.”
Jess gave him a crooked smile. “So you’re claiming to know more than Stephen Hawking?”
Scoggins raised an eyebrow. “We all have our own opinions, Jess. And each of us thinks we know better than the others do.”
“Nice dodge, professor.” Now Vince was the one giving the crooked smile.
“I wasn’t trying to dodge the question,” Scoggins said. “An equivalence of biological intelligence with digital intelligence—it’s never going to happen. But then I base my conclusion partly on my worldview, which includes a biblical definition of who we are as human beings, Imago Dei, created in the image of God. Perhaps my biblical understanding isn’t quite correct, but I would stake my professional reputation on it.” Scoggins pointed to a journal lying on the corner of his desk. “As a matter of fact, I already have.”
“So that’s what Paul meant when he told me he didn’t exist in his brain. That it‘s only an interface to the real person.”
“Exactly. It’s part of our dualistic nature—physical and spiritual.”
“Physical and spiritual,” Vince said. “I think I understand what you mean by dualism, but could you explain, once more, exactly what you mean when you use the term?”
“Sure. Let me state in another way the differences between materialism and dualism. Dualism says that our mind—where we think and exist—is separate from the matter that comprises the brain. Mind and material are separate categories. Neither one can be reduced to, or can be said to contain, the other.”
“If that were true …” Jess massaged her forehead, then looked up. “Couldn’t we demonstrate it, somehow, in a lab? I mean, we could have mental states that don’t correspond to physical states of the brain and vice versa.”
“And that’s a brilliant deduction, Ms. Jamison. Yes, we have demonstrated in a laboratory that mental function and brain function don’t always correlate. Which means that mental function is not identical to brain function.”
Jess shook her head. “Then why aren’t we hearing about this from some source—science or the media?”
“Journal articles have been published about this. The evidence is out there. One researcher even demonstrated that acts of the will, making choices, have no corresponding brain activity. Volition does not require a brain.”
“That has been demonstrated in a lab?” Jess’s eyebrows nearly touched.
“Yes. But to someone who has literally sold their soul to a materialistic view of the universe, it takes more than a little evidence to convince them to change their mind and admit that there is more to us, and this universe, than just the physical. For goodness sake, we might find that we’re accountable to some higher being.” Scoggins chuckled. “It’s frustrating, but such is the world of academia.”

This is probably the only chapter in Virtuality without some action or at least a high level of conflict. But, hopefully, the subject matter has intrigued you. If so, prepare to go much deeper as Vince and Jess try to find out what’s happening in the SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) that comprises Virtuality’s lab.

Do you believe any technology could produce a trillion-dollar business within three years and could endanger the lives of everyone in America? If such technology exists, how would you stop its spread, when the potential monetary rewards are so high? If answers to those questions exist, and if you want to know more about them, you’ll have to read the book.

Virtuality back cover blurb:
What would you do with innovative technology that could make you the next Bill Gates but could unravel the fabric of civilized society?

“Don’t sell the company. Jess can help.” His brother Paul’s dying words to Vince van Gordon, a struggling author who can’t write happy endings, inherits controlling interest in Virtuality, a growing high-tech company with a mysterious product the US Army classified Top Secret. Paul’s last words force Vince to return home to Seattle to run Virtuality and face the girl he walked away from seven years ago. Can Vince, once again, endure being eclipsed by Paul’s larger-than-life shadow, a shadow that cost him the woman he loves?

Jessica (Jess) Jamison is a genius, a beautiful, highly introverted, young woman who can count her friends on her thumbs. Seven years ago, Vince left, shattering her heart. Now Jess has a Computer Science degree and still prays her childhood soulmate will come home. If he’s willing to reconcile their relationship, Jess can help Vince take the reins of Virtuality. But why is someone trying to kill Vince and her? And could Professor Scoggins be right—that, in the wrong hands, Virtuality’s technology could shred the fabric of civilization, and stopping it may literally take an act of Congress?

Virtuality, a character-driven thriller with romance about dangerous technology lurking on the near horizon—a story of love and sacrifice, illustrating that there are no shadowed, worthless people in God’s economy.

Back in His Arms Again ~ Teresa Ives Lilly ~ Behind the Story

Back in His Arms Again

A novella by Teresa Ives Lilly.

This story had been long dreamt of in my mind and finally given the perfect opportunity to blossom into a full novella. The truth is, I’ve always dreamed of moving to Colorado, although I’ve only been to visit there one time.

But as the Holidays draw near each year, the yearning to find a lovely lodge to visit comes to my mind.  When I did visit Denver, there was hardly any snow. In fact, to even get a picture with snow, I had to find an old pile behind a building. But I hadn’t seen snow in over twenty years, so even that dirty snow was wonderful.

Anyway, when I was offered the chance to write in the Hotel Amore Collection, which takes place in Colorado, I immediately agreed to join the group and of course, chose the Christmas Season in which to place my story.

Now, don’t try to read too much into the story, even if some of the wishes in the book are wishes I have had. Instead, relax by a nice Christmas fire and imagine yourself snow-bound in the lovely Hotel Amore…. Maybe finding a new love… or an old, true love.

Back in His Arms Description:

Paris has come to the Lodge at Confluence to work as the event’s coordinator and fulfill her desire to see the beautiful state of Colorado. The last thing she expected to find was her high school sweetheart Paul Gordon, the only man she ever truly loved.

Will the Lodge’s reputation of being the Hotel of Love (Hotel Amore) stand true when Paris finds herself back in Paul’s arms again?
