Julie Arduini ~ Entangled ~ Timeless Thursday

ENTANGLED

Julie Arduini

I was about two-thirds done revising my first Adirondack romance, Entrusted. The heroine, Jenna Anderson, was a strong character with a great surrender message to tell about trusting God with fears about change and wanting to belong. Helping Jenna was her new best friend, Sheriff Carla Rowling.
The more Jenna and Carla hung out, the more I realized Carla was someone I wanted to know better. As I gave her a secondary story within Entrusted as a single mom who loved to “do hair” as a hobby, I had fun with her. At the time I was trying to finish the first story and wasn’t thinking long term. If I needed to create a series, I figured I’d use the “bad girl” from Entrusted, Trish Maxwell, as a lead in another story. I never dreamed Carla would get her own.
I revised Entrusted so much from what the first draft was that I ended up re writing the ending. I had no idea how I was going to wrap up some loose ends when it came to Jenna, Ben, and the Speculator Falls senior center. I was praying, and I have a team of ladies that pray for me. One writing session at the laptop not only did all the loose ends come together, it gave Carla her own story. I was floored.
Entangled was my hardest book to write. I was a new indie author re-releasing Entrusted and releasing Entangled at the same time. Our son graduated from high school and our other son got married in the same time frame, out of state. It was stressful. On the writing front, I couldn’t relate to Carla. She was a single mom. She wasn’t honest. But the reader feedback to this day remains strong. Readers can relate to Carla. Guilt, shame and regret are things that hold us back. Through surrender in Christ, we can find freedom.
In Entangled, Carla’s been given her dream to leave her job as sheriff and attend cosmetology school. The gift is so overwhelming that she struggles with feeling unworthy, especially since she still feels guilty for becoming a mom as a teenager. When Wayne Peterson re-enters her and their son Noah’s life, Carla creates some tangles between her and her steadfast boyfriend, the flannel-wearing, truck driver Will Marshall. Can Carla release her past and create a future full of highlights, or, will she burn her options worse than a bad perm?
I love that when I couldn’t see beyond the page God dropped an entire character’s history and transformational story into my laptop as I tried to finish my first novel. I hope everyone enjoys Carla’s story as much as I do.

Entangled: Surrendering the Past
Book #2, Surrendering Time Series
Julie Arduini
“You need to leave me alone. It’s the least you can do.”

Carla Rowling has been given her dream of attending cosmetology school. The gift is so generous she feels unworthy because of choices she made as a teen. The pressure mounts as Carla juggles school, is a single mom, helps her best friend Jenna plan her wedding, spends time with boyfriend Will Marshall, and deals with the fact that her son's father is back in their lives.

Will Marshall is the one Speculator Falls resident everyone can count on. His truck deliveries are reliable. He's the first to help friends like Ben Regan with boat work or be a card partner with Bart Davis. Will's ready to settle down with Carla, loving her is natural. He's bonded with her son, Noah. But when Carla starts cosmetology school, she puts emotional distance between her and Will.

Can Carla release her past and create a future full of highlights, or, will she burn her options worse than a bad perm?

ENTANGLED EXCERPT: Julie Arduini

Chapter One
A twenty-minute run. That’s all I need. Just enough time to feel free.
Instead, the Hamilton County DA places a neon green gift bag in my hand. He then looks to the crowd. “Just forty-eight hours and our very own Carla Rowling will go from handcuffs to haircuts.”
The Piseco Inn meeting room is wall-to-wall people. My fellow law enforcement, paramedic, and fire and rescue colleagues hand me gifts and joke at the idea of me leaving for beauty school.
I paste on a smile as I lift a pair of black running shoes with hot pink trim from layers of tissue paper, but my focus is on my breathing. Steady and even. Like when I’m running.
“From squad car to standing all day. What a switch.” Fred Beebe, retired bank president, grins.
I stand and balance my arm on Joanie, the county dispatcher, as I slip off the three-inch heels I borrowed from my best friend Jenna and try on the comfy shoes.
“Hey, Carla! Will you wear those as you run with scissors to chase perps out of your hair salon?” Jack Hunt, my replacement, snorts from laughing too hard.
“Do they fit?” Joanie looks to the empty box on the floor where wrapping paper and ribbon litter the area.
I nod, let go, and sit. “They’re so comfortable I’m going to wear them for the rest of my party.” And as soon as I can, break these sneakers in. There's nothing like the feel of new running shoes, and no better time to use them than when the walls feel like they’re closing in.
Will Marshall, my truck-driving boyfriend of less than a year, adjusts his bright orange hunting cap and places his hand over mine. “Carla, those shoes are going to be great for the long days at your salon.” He turns to Joanie and winks. “What a nice gift. You all have the best ideas to transform our favorite sheriff to our new stylist.”
Looking around, I see my former colleagues from around Hamilton, the only county in New York State that doesn’t have traffic lights. The people smile and chant my name. Their grins seem sincere as they point to the table full of packages. Gifts I’ll never deserve.
“C’mon, keep opening your presents so we can have cake.” My thirteen-year old son, Noah, never wastes time, especially when it comes to food. He walks over and grabs a stack of wrapped boxes
I sigh and rest my moist hands on my lap. “Okay. Hand me another. By the looks of that pile, we’ll be here all week.”
Will chuckles. “Sweetie, you don’t have that kind of time. You start beauty school in two days.”
I glance at the door, my breathing no longer steady, but fast. Beads of sweat form at my hairline and I regret not putting my hair in a ponytail without bangs. Probably everyone’s counting the perspiration drops falling on my jeans.
I have to run.

Return of the “Mean Girl” ~ Engaged ~ Julie Arduini ~ Giveaway

Peg here: I'm pleased to once again welcome back author Julie Arduini as she takes us behind the scenes in the writing of ENGAGED, the third and final book in the Surrendering Time Series. Julie is also offering a free copy of this book. Details below.

Return of the “Mean Girl”

ENGAGED: Surrendering the Future
Book 3, Surrendering Time Series
Trish’s Story

Trish Maxwell returns to Speculator Falls with crushed dreams, egg on her face, and the chance to make a new start with the very people and places she used to make fun of.

Trish Maxwell’s back in Speculator Falls with egg on her face and a lot of apologies to make. She left the mountain town for her dream job in New York City, only to come back unemployed. With no prospects, she works at her mom’s department store and makes amends as she finds a new passion creating window displays for Adirondack businesses. She works hard and tries to convince the people of Speculator Falls she’s changed for the better.

As Trish pitches in with community events, she meets paramedic Wayne Peterson, the one man who doesn’t seem to judge her. She even makes friends with Jenna Regan, who helps Trish when people demand to know what’s next in Trish’s life. Living in New York City has been her goal, but the more she’s around Wayne and the Adirondack area, the more she’s drawn to revising her plans. Just when Trish thinks the plan for her life’s coming together, a second chance comes her way that could give her every career goal she’s ever wanted, but threaten to tear her and Wayne apart. Can Trish surrender fears about her future and discover God’s plan for her?

Part of the fun in writing the third book in my Surrendering Time series was making the “mean girl” from Book 1, Entrusted, the heroine of Engaged. Trish Maxwell started out as the scandal of Speculator Falls, a small mountain village in the Upstate NY Adirondack Mountains.

Trish grew up in Speculator Falls and the residents and her high school boyfriend, Ben Regan, assumed she’d get married and stay in the area. Trish couldn’t contain her longing to leave the county so rural it was labeled pioneer land, and the first opportunity she had, she left Speculator Falls for New York City. Without saying goodbye. Without handing in her job resignation at the senior center. Even during a quick visit, it was too easy for Trish to make sure the new girl in town, Jenna Anderson, realize she was the darling of Speculator Falls and Ben’s life.

Fast forward and by the time Engaged begins, Trish is back in Speculator Falls without a job. She’s living with her parents again, working part-time at the department store. New York City life wasn’t as glamorous as she thought it would be. Now that she’s back in her hometown, she has no idea what she’s going to do.

And she has to face the same people she refused to say goodbye to when she left.
I loved Engaged because it was born in conflict. Right away Trish has to face one of the senior citizens who has a long memory and is bent on making sure Trish faces consequences for leaving the senior center without a director. She has to watch all the people she rejected move on without her. When paramedic Wayne Peterson comes to her rescue, she has a second chance. He’s one person who hasn’t been affected by her selfish choices. He understands scandal and how to overcome it. He sees Trish with a bright future when everyone else is focused on her pas

There was conflict for me as well. I had to create a transformation where Trish lets go of her mean girl qualities and becomes a woman who works well with others. There were times she had progress, and yet took a step back as a defensive mechanism. Winning her neighbors, Ben, Jenna, and the senior citizens over wasn’t an easy task.

Thankfully, readers loved Trish’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Trish was the perfect character to complete the Surrendering Time series with.

True freedom in Christ is found through surrender

ENGAGED: Surrendering the Future

Book 3, Surrendering Time Series

Trish’s Story

by Julie Arduini

Trish Maxwell returns to Speculator Falls with crushed dreams, egg on her face, and the chance to make a new start with the very people and places she used to make fun of.

Trish Maxwell was a known fixture in the Adirondack mountain village of Speculator Falls. Although she grew up there and her parents were prominent members with their work and volunteer duties, Trish didn’t see herself living in the area as an adult. As soon as she had the chance to leave town, she did, believing it would be the culmination of her dreams to live in a big city and have a high-powered job.

What she didn’t count on was the business cutting back, and she was the first to be let go. With no other plan or funds to stay in New York City, Trish is forced to move back in with her parents. People were upset with her for the way she left, and she had to deal with them. Trish also needed to determine her future, and she truly wasn’t sure what she’s going to do. Even when paramedic Wayne Peterson came to her rescue, Trish still faced confusion with the options.

In all my writing, I use a surrender theme as a backdrop. True freedom in Christ is found through surrender, and there are enough surrender issues to write for a long time. In ENGAGED, Trish has to surrender her failed dreams for God’s best plan. Sounds easy, but I’ve been around people who have lost decades of opportunities because they were holding onto a goal that wasn’t meant for them. I also have dealt with plans that didn’t go the way I wanted, and I had to choose whether I wanted to be bitter or better. Trish had the same choices.

What was interesting to write and share with a book club at my church was that faith wasn’t automatic with Trish. Wayne turned his life around and embraced a personal faith with Christ because he realized he wanted to be a good steward as a single father. Trish went with the false thinking that because her parents were staples of the church and she’d been in the building for years, she only needed to throw up a quick prayer when she needed some answers. As Trish encountered more conflict, she needed to see that wasn’t enough.

Finding a personal faith in Christ apart from family is important to me because I’ve taught too many kids over the years that felt because they sat in the same pew week after week with grandparents and parents, that was their ticket to heaven. Or, because they went to a Christian concert, that was enough. Through fiction, I hope I can present a solid story that would make readers want to hunger for Christ and make Him their best friend, as I have. As my characters need to.

Have you ever faced a situation that didn’t go as you thought it would? Did you have another plan in place? Were you tempted to be bitter? How about faith matters? Have you met someone who felt they were good to go with their faith because their family was invested in Christ?

Why the Next Book Isn’t Ready ♦ Julie Arduini

Please welcome author Juiie Arduini with a guest blog post that touched me right where I live!

Thanks for being here and sharing this post today, Julie!

Why the Next Book Isn’t Ready
by Julie Arduini +Julie Arduini

As an indie author, I have the ability to set my own deadlines. I’ve learned I often give myself a goal without allowing reality, and last year I struggled to find success. This year I’ve embedded more time into my tasks, knowing life is just going to get in the way. With a husband that travels, a college aged son, and a teen daughter with medical issues to monitor, there’s rarely a dull moment.
Or time to write.

The wisdom in that played itself out immediately this year. I had to take an unexpected trip out of state and it was full of winter driving and heavy emotions. My husband was local, but unavailable as he was training clients from out of town. That left our eighteen-year-old son to fill in the gaps.
I gave him a modified schedule, writing down menu ideas, ingredients, medicine reminders for his sister, homework issues she had, and the pet agenda. I didn’t add laundry, housecleaning, or bill paying. While I was away, I received a text.

Now I know why your third book isn’t finished.

Tears fell as I realized he got it. There are so many times I get all the “stuff” done to sit down and write, only to look at the clock and realize it’s time to go to school and pick our daughter up. There is always something unplanned that pops up. A run to the bank. Praying for someone who texts an emergency. Cleaning up a pet mess. It all adds up.

Of course, I’m not perfect. I find myself on Facebook or looking up to see what someone else is watching on Hulu, and that’s valuable time, too. There’s also marketing the books already available. Creating a monthly newsletter. Engaging with readers through social media. As much as I try to write that in my iBloom planner, these things seem to take a little more time than I anticipated.

Last month I finally reached a place where I wasn’t traveling or going to doctor appointments when I felt like I was supposed to set ENGAGED aside and do something unique. I created a devotional called FINDING FREEDOM THROUGH SURRENDER and it utilizes the surrender themes I wrote about in my Surrendering Time series. What makes it very different than anything I’ve read or written is that the daily readings are written from the POV (point of view) of the characters from ENTRUSTED, ENTANGLED, and ENGAGED. They share their experiences of surrendering fear, loss, change, regret and the future without giving away the story. I’m formatting the 30 day edition for Amazon now, and the 14 day preview is available for readers at my website. It was sidetrack I wasn’t counting on, but already I’ve received reader feedback that the readings helped them with their surrender issues. That’s what I’m called to do, so I’m not frustrated that my ENGAGED deadlines need tweaking. Again.

ENGAGED: Coming Spring 2017

Trish Maxwell returns to her mountain hometown after a failed move to New York City with a lot of apologies to make. The Speculator Falls residents haven’t forgotten how she left, and want to know what’s next for her. Paramedic Wayne Peterson encourages Trish with her idea to market Adirondack store fronts to increase business traffic, but he also wonders if her love for city life will lure her away from their blossoming friendship. Can Trish find a “Plan B” that will satisfy her and gain back the trust of everyone in Speculator Falls?
