An Interview with author Mike Garrett ~ New Release ~ Innocence Denied ~ Giveaay

Please welcome newly published author Mike Garrett who has graciously consented to answer a few interview questions for us.

Welcome Mike!

Tell us about your Writing

Have you been previously published?

Innocence Denied is my first attempt at Christian fiction. My secular novel, Keeper, was published almost thirty years ago. It sold out its initial printing and was optioned for a movie.

One of my early publishing experiences was with Dun’s Review, a business magazine. I wrote a short humor piece for them that was subsequently reprinted around the world.

How was writing a Christian novel different from your secular fiction?

With Keeper, I focused on establishing a career and building a name for myself. There was none of that this time; no profit motive and no desire to be in the spotlight. I did it solely to serve God through his spiritual gifts. This one is for Him, not me. He inspired me all along the way to such a degree that I don’t even feel comfortable taking credit for it. It was as if I was the keyboard and He was the typist.

I originally wrote Innocence Denied for self-publication because it went against the grain of most traditional publishers. It’s a love story but not a romance; it has elements of suspense but isn’t a suspense novel. It’s difficult to classify, and that’s a big no-no for virtually all traditional publishers.

When reading, what is your favorite genre?

For secular fiction, I enjoy Harlan Coben’s stand-alone suspense novels. He knows how to keep the pages turning, and I appreciate that in an author. I tried to do that in Innocence Denied. For Christian fiction, I prefer Terri Blackstock.

How similar are you to your hero/heroines?

There’s a lot of me in Derrick, though I’m not nearly as good a man as he. I’ve got a long way to go for that. To me he represents what I could be at my best, almost a role model, and I strive to keep moving toward that goal.

Let's talk about your book:

Is there a theme verse that holds this story together?

Matthew 3:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (GNT)

I considered alternate titles, one of which was actually One Good Deed.
The purpose of Innocence Denied is to reach unbelievers and give fellow Christians an example of non-threatening witnessing that they may put to good use at some time. When I finished the novel,  I felt God urge me to investigate commercial publication because that could reach more people in need of its message, but I found little initial success. My own literary agent didn’t like it, and I couldn’t get any other agents to even look at it. I was about to give up when God led me to CrossLink, a Christian publisher with a more broad approach to publishing, and they saw the merit in what I was attempting to do.

What takeaway value do you want readers to gain from your novel?

Innocence Denied offers several messages, one of which is it’s often more difficult to accept God’s forgiveness than it is to forgive yourself. Another is an illustration of how, even when you’re facing dire circumstances of your own, it’s best to focus on the plight of others.

I pray readers will see the importance of living life selflessly.

Innocence Denied
Derrick Walton is a Christian on a mission, risking his own life to save an unbelieving woman in distress.

Larissa Baxter is a gorgeous socialite who has always relied on her striking beauty to get what she wants. After being falsely arrested for murder and posting bail, however, she faces life in prison. As a fugitive, she must do what, to her, is the unthinkable--de-emphasize her looks to appear as average as possible and avoid undue attention.

After their paths cross, they hide in isolation as a nationwide manhunt ensues, and Derrick realizes that the most important rescue of all still awaits--saving Larissa's soul.

God wanted him to save her if it was the last thing he did ... and it likely would be.

Wrinkles for Free - A Tongue-in-Cheek Look at a Hard Truth

Wrinkles for Free!

Picture from Google Images
“Two Minutes? I have two minutes and that’s all it takes to remove fifty-one years of child, marriage, job, stress ... induced wrinkles! You can tell by the results; the faces look pathetic in the before pictures and amazing in the after pictures!  And the wrinkle-free me will last for up to nine hours. If I hide out until noon, and watch TV after nine pm, I’ll look fabulous and I won’t be wasting any of my miracle cream! The best part is, I only have to pay $5.99 for the sample!”

So my friend took them up on their amazing Facebook offer and counted down the days to the arrival of her packages. Yes, packages. What could possibly be better than a sample of an amazing serum? Two samples of amazing serums. She could compare the results and decide exactly how young she wished to look. Perhaps she could even double up and look like a new-born babe.

The first box arrived. No company logo, no packing slip, and no paperwork for re-ordering. The one ounce container was plain for such huge promises, but miracles can be found in the most unexpected places. And don’t forget, it came with an eye cream promising to remove every bit of darkness and puffiness known to man or woman!

The second box arrived. Same thing, boring containers and no contact information.  My friend was undeterred, new skin awaited! Undeterred, that is, until she received her credit card bills. Apparently in the fine print, the ad says the sample costs only $5.99 IF you return it within fourteen days (less the eight days it took to arrive, giving you six days to return the sample.) If not, the cost of your sample is a mere $350.00. And out of the kindness of their hearts, the company will send you a new sample every thirty days for another $350.00. My friend now owed $700.00 dollars to the first company, and $400.00 dollars to the second one.

Yikes!

Thankfully, contact numbers were listed on her credit card bills and she could cancel both automatic orders. The first credit card company considered the $700.00 dollars a fraudulent sale and insured it; however, the second credit card company considered the sale, although unethical, valid and she was stuck with the $400.00 charge.

I must admit, I was tempted to sign up for my own free sample when I saw the remarkable results while I was researching for this post. My friend says the cream doesn’t work – not for a minute, let alone nine hours.

I guess I’m stuck with my wrinkles, but at least they’re free!

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Prov. 31:30 ESV

1883 California Trail, Kansas

Missouri mules were the best. Alda grew to love the creatures working side by side with her pa on their farm along the banks of the Missouri River. He would be hopping mad when he realized his wife and daughter colluded behind his back to sell a pack string. It wouldn’t matter that they were trying to save the farm.
Alda struck out on her own to drive the team over fifteen hundred miles. By day three, her lead mule Bessie refused to take one more step. It was a good thing the handsome cowboy Cord stopped by to lend a hand or Alda might still be sitting in the dust.
Now, Alda needed the man to move on so she could continue her journey. Judging by the spark in Cord’s eye … it just might take some convincing.

Author Gail Kittleson Has a New Book Coming Out!

Hello, Whisperers! It is my pleasure to welcome author Gail Kittleson as she shares her thoughts and information about her soon-to-be-released new book: With Each New Dawn.

Welcome, Gail, tell us about this book.

With Each New Dawn has been through the mill! Writing this historical women’s fiction, the sequel to In Times Like These, has taken years,  required a LOT of research, some drastic revisions, and sooooo much editing. But oh my—I have learned so much, and really LOVE this story!

It used to be titled A Purpose True, which is what the heroine, Kate, seeks. But With Each New Dawn fits her wild story perfectly—the kind of saga she must take only one day at a time, even though she’s an adventurous, inquisitive sort.

If only she could learn more about her parents, who died when she was young. Not likely, since she’s in London during the Blitzkrieg…but that not likely becomes unexpected reality when she meets a mysterious Frenchman who says she’s the spitting image of her mother, whom he met in the Great War. He produces photos to prove his claim, and for the first time, she glimpses her father, who served as an Allied spy.

Kate thought she had plenty on her plate, grieving her Royal Air Force pilot husband’s death and facing motherhood alone. But little did she know that war hadn’t finished turning her world upside down. Her story will pull readers into the dangers of wartime London, and even further, into the suffering of simple French peasants.

During such trials, we ask interminable questions. But we can also grow and deepen in our faith. Come along with Kate into an era of uncertainties and great peril, the era of our parents and grandparents, the Greatest Generation.

About the book:

American Kate Isaac grieves her husband, awaits their child’s birth, and welcomes her best friend Addie to war-torn London. But after her miscarriage, a meeting with mysterious Monsieur le Blanc launches her into Britain’s Secret Operations Executive(SOE). In late 1943, Kate parachutes into Southern France to aid the Resistance.
Domingo, a grieving Basque mountain guide-turned-saboteur, meets her parachute drop, tends her injured ankle, and carries her to safety. Reunited a few months later, they discover the injured Monsieur le Blanc who with his dying breath reveals his familial connection to Kate.
In the shadow of Waffen SS atrocities, Domingo and Kate find his younger brother Gabirel missing. While Domingo seeks Gabirel, Domingo’s parish priest, Père Gaspard, creates a new identity for Kate.
United once again, Kate and Domingo subject their mutual attraction to the cause. But can mere human will and moral courage change the war’s tide and forge a future for them?

Michelle, what made you write this story?

The story premise came to me as I was just pondering my faith, asking myself how deep does it go, would it survive if truly challenged? The characters wrestle with some of life's toughest questions—How could God let this happen to me? Where is God when my heart is breaking? I believe in God, but my hurt is so big I’m not sure He’s enough. These are all thoughts that I've encountered in my life as well.

But even when life is unbearably hard, God is right there placing our tears in a bottle and inviting us into His arms to carry us through. I hope readers come away with a better sense of that truth when they read Grace in the Flames.

What's next?

I’m about to release my second novel, a fun dual-genre story I co-wrote with the amazing April W Gardner called Better than Fiction. It’s a Women’s fiction wrapped around a historical romance set in 1916 Corona during the height of its auto racing glory. The short description is:
While creating a fictional romance between her 1916 heroine and a reckless racecar driver, a novelist falls prey to an emotional affair with the man who inspires her handsome hero.
Corona, California is my hometown and it’s been a blast to dig into our rich history. The release will coincide with the town’s 100th anniversary of the final race, and we are so excited! We have a Facebook page set up for the book: www.facebook.com/betterthanfiction2016 and will be offering a free digital copy to subscribers, so check that out, too!
